Class Overview

Handa’s surprise is a class of 7 pupils all having a diagnosis of ASD. All of our pupils enjoy engaging and motivating learning tasks delivered always in a sensory and fun way. Within the classroom we use music cues to help the pupils to familiarise themselves with the routines of the day. As a class we enjoy singing hands, physical maths, outdoor learning, sensory circuits and opportunities to experience different cultures

Topic Summary

Welcome back to Handa’s surprise class for another exciting half-term! How have we reached the last term already!

This term we shall be learning all about Queen Elizabeth II, where she lives, what she wears, what animals she has and what her favourite food is. The children will be making their own afternoon tea just like what the Queen eats! We shall be exploring a range of different royal artefacts and texts. During this time, we will also look at historical events and significant people from the past and present.

In English, we will be focusing our learning on the sequencing of events and developing our writing skills to ensure we have a good understanding of key punctuation and can form letters clearly and correctly. Then moving onto the correct spacing between words and capital letters.

In maths we will be focusing on collecting and recording data, number lines, identifying coins and ordering of 2D and 3D shapes.

In PHSE we will be looking at developing our awareness of healthy living. The children will be encouraged to think about healthy choices, healthy foods, balanced diets, and personal hygiene.

Outdoor learning

School will have a continued focus on ‘Outside Learning in all Weathers’ this year, with this in mind if possible please ensure that on each day your child has a suitable coat for the weather conditions.

PE sessions will take place on a Thursday afternoon. This term we will be focusing on gymnastics. We will be practicing different actions and learning how to sequence them. We will also be learning to jump from familiar gym equipment. Please ensure a PE kit is sent into school ready for this session.

General Notices

Please send social fund contribution (£6) into school as soon as possible to enable us to begin cooking and provide daily snack. This is especially important as morning snack time is a great communication opportunity.

Key notices: Please can you make sure that children have suitable clothing for outdoors including wellies, sun hat and sun cream. I am sure you will agree that the weather has been very unpredictable recently so would like to cover all eventualities and be prepared.

Home / School Communication

How you can support learning at home:

Encourage your child to read a range of texts. Play phonic games on phase 2 letters and sounds website. Complete tasks set through ‘Family Homework’. I have set some work on purple mash which is linked to what we are learning in class, if you have any problems logging on, please let me know. Keep looking at DOJO for lots of fun activities.

Class Dojo

As part of our Covid-secure procedures, we are unable to issue home-school diaries this year.  Government guidance say's that schools must quarantine any books that come into school from home for up to 72 hours.  All home-school communication will therefore need to move over to Class Dojo.  You should expect to receive home-school communication from your child's class team approximately three times per week.  This will provide a fine balance between staff workload and their well-being whilst ensuring you are kept regularly up-to-date on your child's experience in school.  We must however politely remind parents/carers that staff will not be expected to read and/or respond to any Class Dojo messages in the evenings, at weekends or during the school holidays.

Thank you to those parents who have already signed up for this - your child's class team will be in touch if you have not yet logged in.

Telephone

There is normally member of the class team available to speak to between 8:15 - 8:40 am or 3:00 - 3:30 pm, please phone the school office and ask for a member of staff from the class if you wish to speak to us.
