Class Overview:

Welcome to Handa’s surprise class, a class based in The Burrow, taught by Nicol Hutley (teacher), Tina Carr (teaching assistant), Georgina Gadsby (teaching assistant) and Jacob Ward (teaching assistant).  The pupils in Handa’s Surprise class are primarily following the developing and deepening pathways of our curriculum.  All learning tasks are delivered in a sensory and engaging way using a total communication approach.

As a class we enjoy outdoor learning, physical education, cooking, science, opportunities to experience different cultures, building friendships and a love for reading.  Pupils routinely access a range of therapies and interventions including TACPAC, Attention Autism, Intensive Interaction and Sensory circuits.

Topic Summary:

I hope you all have had a wonderful summer and enjoyed the nice weather!

The class newsletter is a way in which I outline some of the events that will happen this half term and briefly overview what we will be studying in the half term. This will supplement the newsletter which St Giles Spencer sends directly. The topic this half term is ‘All Around the World’. This topic focuses primarily on learning about different landmarks, both locally and nationally; mainly within our geography topic.

In English we will focus on the story ‘London Calls’. This story details different landmarks within London as a bus journey’s through the city. We will be working on what landmarks we can see, the order of the text and predicting what comes next.

In Maths we are focusing on number; understanding 1:1 correspondence, matching numerals to amounts and how we can represent them. We will also be learning about time; our key routines and the order of which they happen. We will also learn about the order of the days and the key events for each day, progressing to morning and afternoon. In science we are looking at different materials, describing, sorting and grouping them by properties.

Outdoor learning:

School will have a continued focus on ‘Outside Learning in all Weathers’ this year, with this in mind if possible please ensure that on each day your child has a suitable coat for the weather conditions.

We will have PE on a Thursday morning. This half term we will be working on ball skills- throwing, catching and striking. Please send a PE kit into school. We will keep this for the half term to ensure children have it each week To help the children engage in learning we have introduced sensory circuits in the morning and meditation in the afternoon. Children will also be engaging in wake-up shake up sessions within class.

General Notices:

We ask for a contribution of £6 per half term which contributes to regular class cooking sessions and daily snack. We are aiming to enrich the curriculum through a variety of trips and will give you notice of these in advance. As the weather begins to change please make sure you send your child in appropriate clothing.

Dates for your diary:

Upcoming events this half term include:

  •  Coffee + catch up session: Tuesday 20th September – 9:30-10:30
  • Coffee + catch up session: Wednesday 12th October – 1:15-2:15

Home / School Communication:

How you can support learning at home:

Encourage your child to read a range of texts. Play phonic games on phase 2 letters and sounds website. Complete tasks set through ‘Family Homework’. I have set some work on purple mash which is linked to what we are learning in class, if you have any problems logging on, please let me know. Keep looking at DOJO for lots of fun activities.

Class Dojo

Day-to-day home-school communication will be through Class Dojo.  You should expect to receive home-school communication from your child's class team approximately three times per week.  This will provide a fine balance between staff workload and their well-being whilst ensuring you are kept regularly up-to-date on your child's experience in school.  We must however politely remind parents/carers that staff will not be expected to read and/or respond to any Class Dojo messages in the evenings, at weekends or during the school holidays.

Thank you to those parents who have already signed up for this - your child's class team will be in touch if you have not yet logged in.

Telephone

There is normally member of the class team available to speak to between 8:15 - 8:40 am or 3:00 - 3:30 pm, please phone the school office and ask for a member of staff from the class if you wish to speak to us.
