Class Overview

Topic Summary

Dear Parents and Carers, We hope you all had a good Summer. The children have all settled well into the class and we are enjoying getting to know them. The teaching in Gruffalo Class will be shared between Karen Robertson (Mon & Tue) and Becky Green (Wed, Thu, Fri) and the teaching assistants are Mel and Lyn.

Our topic this half term is ‘All Aboard’ with a focus on transport in our local community. We will be looking at various modes of transport we can use to travel around Derby like cars, buses, bikes, taxis and trains. Before we start the transport topic, we also have a mini-topic on ‘The Gruffalo’ where we will read the Gruffalo story and learn about the characters. So lots of exciting work happening!

In English, we will be using the text ‘Duck in a Truck’; pupils will continue to develop their mark making and writing skills through engaging in ‘Write Dance’ and fine motor activities. The daily sensory story experience will foster attention and listening skills as well as learning about the characters through rhyme and actions. They will be prompted to join in with repetitive lines.

In maths, pupils will extend their counting skills by joining in with familiar number rhymes and actions. They will be learning to identify numbers through use of number jigsaws and using number cards during practical activities.

Science will give the pupils the opportunity to investigate forces; they will be learning about how the animals in the story ‘Duck in the Truck’ were able to move the truck out of the mud and how forces can be applied in different situations, including using magnets.

Locational Geography will be our topic focus and the pupils will look at their immediate environment and what transport we use to get there. We will follow trails and use journey sticks to remember our route.

Outdoor learning

PE sessions will take place each week. Please ensure a labelled PE kit is sent into school ready for these sessions. These kits can be kept in school on the children’s pegs and will be sent home at the end of each half term to be washed.

General Notices

Clothing - Please send in a spare change of clothes in case your child has an accident at school. Wellies are also very useful when it’s wet weather. Now we are in Autumn children will need a warm coat please.

Social fund contribution - We would really appreciate it if you could send a social fund contribution of £6 into school. A form will be sent out regarding this. This pays for a daily snack for the children at break time and also enables us to buy cooking ingredients for cookery sessions. Many thanks.

Home / School Communication

How you can support learning at home: Please see the homework sheet which is sent out every half term. Sharing books together on a daily basis will support their reading skills and encourage the love of reading. Please keep in touch using the Class Dojo app. However, if you have any immediate concerns please phone the school office.

Class Dojo

As part of our Covid-secure procedures, we are unable to issue home-school diaries this year.  Government guidance say's that schools must quarantine any books that come into school from home for up to 72 hours.  All home-school communication will therefore need to move over to Class Dojo.  You should expect to receive home-school communication from your child's class team approximately three times per week.  This will provide a fine balance between staff workload and their well-being whilst ensuring you are kept regularly up-to-date on your child's experience in school.  We must however politely remind parents/carers that staff will not be expected to read and/or respond to any Class Dojo messages in the evenings, at weekends or during the school holidays.

Thank you to those parents who have already signed up for this - your child's class team will be in touch if you have not yet logged in.

There is normally member of the class team available to speak to between 8:15 - 8:40 am or 3:00 - 3:30 pm, please phone the school office and ask for a member of staff from the class if you wish to speak to us.
